The Promises of God Storybook Bible

With seven children we have had our share of children’s and story Bibles roll through our bookshelves. Most are adequate and very age-appropriate for sharing the foundations and stories of our faith. However, most of them lack a certain depth to sustain the slightly older children who are a bit too old for board books, but not quite ready for the pre-teen devotional.

In The Promises of God Storybook Bible, Jennifer Lyell spans this information gap with ease and beauty.

The stories are witty, relevant, and accurate to the meat of the text. Her injection of humor is infectious and brings the sometimes difficult to explain Old Testament stories to life for her young audience.

Additionally, the inclusion of a few brief discussion questions at the end of each story creates a great jumping point for further discussion and internalization. This is key in understanding and applying the principles found in the rich depths of the Word of God. Jennifer Lyell has done an expert job of helping parents lead their children to a full knowledge of God’s Word.

The focus on God keeping His promises is also extremely important to me. Our journey through this life has brought us through some very trying times, during which it has been a crucial point of faith to remember that God always keeps his promises. Instilling this in young children can make a huge impact on their ability to weather the storms of life which will undoubtedly come there way as they grow.

Though most book reviews focus on the text and writing style, any review of this book would be incomplete without mention of the striking and well-done illustrations from Thanos Tsilis. As a traditional and digital artist, I appreciate the warm and friendly aesthetic created by the thematic artistry found in this book. They are a wonderful compliment to the great summaries found in the stories.

As my grandchildren begin to arrive on the scene, I can see this book being regular reading in Grandpa visits!
