Formed WITH Purpose

Today's Reading:
Psalm 139
Key Verse:
For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. (Psalm 139:13-14)
Devotional
Psalm 139:13-14 holds a special place in my heart. When Brynna was born in 2007 she had many complications, among which was a severe bilateral midline cleft lip and palate, heart troubles, lung issues, and severe malformations in the brain ... all for starters. During her 6 week NICU stay we posted a copy of this passage above her little bed for all to read any time they provided care.
There were more than a few conversations with hospital staff about what this verse meant and how it helped us to have faith and hope. In short, our stance was if Psalm 139 was true, then she wasn't "broken" at all. She was, in fact, knit together for a purpose. She was being asked to carry a great weight of suffering and hardship for the purpose of the Kingdom of God. I can't say we did or do now totally understand it all, but I can say He has used her mightily the past 18 years to reach people I could never reach.
David not only stood in awe in Psalm 8 over the lopsided relationship between God and humanity, but in this Psalm he reminds us that what God is doing with us isn't by mistake or happenstance. David's underlying worldview was strengthened by the intentionality God had and has in our creation and redemption. He may have been stupefied by the FACT that God chose us, but it wasn't from lack of understanding.
David knew God wanted to know us and to be known by us. We can't bear the image of someone we do not know, someone we do not trust. God's knowledge of us isn't one of distant surveillance, it is intimate and close. God forms His image-bearers from the inside out; from the very beginning His hands are in our formation.
This Truth should give us great comfort and confidence to embrace the vocation He has laid out for us and can undergird all of our faith as He moves us forward in His Kingdom.
The challenge for us is to remember how interested and invested He is in us; how much He desires to know us and be known by us.

Reflection
Where do you resist being fully known by God? Are there areas of your life you would rather Him not be a part of? Maybe areas you are ashamed of? He invites you today to bring those areas to Him, to lay them at His feet. He made you, and He loves you. You can trust Him.
Prayer
Father, help me to day to surrender to you all those parts of my soul I wish to keep hidden, the places my sin runs to hide and my shame finds root. Give me courage and peace in your loving and faithful attention.
