Week 27: Day 5: Let the Earth Be Filled

The Word Made Flesh

Day 5: Let the Earth Be Filled

Today's Reading:
Psalm 72

Key Verse:

May his name endure forever; as long as the sun shines, may his fame increase. May all nations be blessed by him and call him blessed. (Psalm 72:17)

Devotional

Something people hear me talk about a great deal is the response people had when they came in contact with God in the Old Testament. One phrase appears over and over; “and they fell down as dead men” or some derivative of it. There’s really no other appropriate response.

Psalm 72 helps to give us a proper vision of Kingship that leads us rightly into a place of worship. This prayer asks for more than success and security for the king, it asks God to give the king justice, righteousness, compassion for the poor, rescue for the needy, and dominion to reach the very ends of the earth.

But the King doesn’t gain or wield His power by crushing the weak as many earthly leaders do. He defends the afflicted, rescues the poor children, and brings blessings to the nations. His reign is marked by peace, righteousness, and compassion.

The Word has indeed become flesh and dwelt among us! Psalm 72 helps us respond properly to this reality with praise and worship. He is the true King and His Kingdom is good news to the poor, the weak, and weary; a blessing to all the nations of the earth.

I love the phrase, “Let the whole earth be filled with His glory.” This entire biblical narrative is heading to that one place: a world completely and utterly full of His glory and praise. He hasn’t abandoned us! He has come to Make All Things New!

Reflection

What part of Psalm 72 helps you worship Jesus as the righteous King? How should the King’s concern for the poor, weak, and needy shape your own response to Him?

Prayer

Father, I pray the entire creation be filled with the awe of your Glory. Teach my heart to worship Jesus as the righteous King who brings justice, mercy, and blessing to the nations. Give me the strength and courage to surrender joyfully and expectantly to His rule, living as one who belongs to His Kingdom, not my own. Amen.
