The Indescribable Voice of God

Today's Reading:
Psalm 29
Key Verse:
The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. (Psalm 29:4)
Devotional
Week 3, Day 3 has us pondering how the reality of there being a divine counsel, or heavenly hosts, shapes who we are becoming in Christ. At first glance it may seem an indifferent truth, one that doesn't really impact us, but I would disagree.
Psalm 29 plainly and abruptly confronts us with the power and majesty of God’s voice. It 'thunders over the waters, shatters cedars, and shakes the wilderness". The whole of creation responds instinctively when the Creator speaks.
When Jesus walked on the water, it was a miracle by any human standard, but was it really for the Creator? Do we find it odd that when the Creator wished for the molecules of hydrogen and oxygen to bear up His weight, that they dutifully did so? Or are we astounded when the winds and sea He created obey Him when He says "be still."?
This Psalm begins calling all heavenly beings to "ascribe glory" to the Lord. Heaven and earth are summoned to give homage to His majesty. God's presence and authority are not fragile or brittle. They are overwhelming and bring order to our very lives.
When chaos reigns, His voice brings order. His voice commands and governs the unseen realm where we find obedience and proper reverence the proper response to His declarations.
So many times we want the guidance and benefit of God without considering the weight of who He is. Psalm 29 reminds us that encountering God may not always be comfortable, but it is always transformative. When we recognize His majesty and power, our reverence for Him grows deeper; our awe over His attention and love widens. Our faith grows when we allow Him to be powerful and not merely helpful.
Brothers and sisters, listen to God's voice today. One fundamental truth we must never, ever lose hold on is that He still speaks to us ... TODAY. He speaks through His Word, His Spirit, His church, and our circumstances. But rest assured ... He DOES speak.
May we all submit any resistance we have to His greatness today without delay. I pray He shapes our hearts to receive His awesome authority with humility and trust.

Reflection
In a culture that reduces God the Almighty into swear words and a cosmic gumball machine, existing only to provide our wants and needs when we call. But Psalm 29 reminds us of His majesty and power.
Where have you tried to domesticate God’s voice rather than submit to it?

Prayer
Father, I'm so grateful your voice brings life and order. Teach me and tune my heart to hear with humility and to trust Your authority and power, even when it shakes all of creation ... especially when it shakes me. Amen
