Paul’s message to the church at Corinth isn’t him trying to give them an inspirational illustration, his version of first-century “Chicken Soup for the Soul.” No, he’s describing for them the nature of the thing God has built and is building.
 
Corinth was hardly the poster child for natural unity. The church there struggled with competition, status, pride, and deep division. Believers there elevated some gifts above others, and still others sought to prove their own importance in the congregation. In the wake of that, others struggled with feeling like they didn’t matter at all. Honestly, it was a mess!
But Paul addresses the problems with a central truth: One Spirit has formed you into one body.

His logic is simple and sound. The eye can’t dismiss the hand or it won’t be able to pick up what it sees. The head can’t decide it has no need for feet, else it will never make it to the destination it has chosen to go. Difference isn’t a flaw in the body, it’s part of the design and what not only makes it beautiful, but what also makes it function.
 
So far, this story has been careening towards the creation of this group of people all along. Sin ultimately fractured fellowship and makes our natural inclination one that turns inward on ourselves. Yet, through Jesus, God has reconciled sinners (you and me and all of humanity) to Himself. He is gathering a people who belong not only to Him, but to one another. The risen Christ has given us His Spirit, and that Spirit joins people from different backgrounds, with different histories, abilities, and callings into one living, thriving body.

Christian unity is more than friendship or shared experience. Becoming truly one doesn’t happen naturally. It takes Divine intervention, and Jesus has provided that for us. It’s He who has knit us together into this empowered community called the church.
 
The church isn’t just a group of people who happen to attend the same services on the weekend; it is literally made up of people, members of the same body, working in unison to accomplish the work of the Kingdom.

Father, thank you for making me part of Your body. Root out any hint of pride, comparison, and self-sufficiency in my heart. Teach me to receive the people to whom You have joined me as gifts and to serve faithfully in the place You have provided. Amen.
