The Word Became Flesh

Today's Reading:
John 1:1–14
Key Verse:
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
Devotional
This devotional, the fourth day, is focused on how we take what we've learned, the transformation taking place in our hearts and see it lived out in our daily lives. Here, Jesus sets the ultimate example of what it looks like for Divinity to have skin on it.
When God created the heavens and the earth, He declared it all 'very good'. He then made man and a garden for him to dwell in, not alone, but in daily communion with Him and the Heavenly Hosts. From there, Adam, and all humanity, was given a mandate: "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it." In short, he was to take this Kingdom Rule of God out from Eden and spread it throughout the earth. This is our original vocation.
While in the Garden, God walked with Adam and Eve "in the cool of the day." (Genesis 3:8) They shared unfettered access and intimate friendship. The very embodiment of Yahweh was physically present with them in this garden paradise.
In many places in the Old Testament, we see language depicting the very tangible and visible presence of God interacting with humans. In many Old Testament passages, we see the same wording John used to refer to the second person of the Godhead; The Word. The Word of the Lord was seen as the embodied (not yet incarnate, but embodied and visible) form of God. Ancient Jews would have easily recognized this language from John as referring to God Himself. (See Genesis 15:1–5, Jeremiah 1:4,9, Isaiah 55:11, others)
John says the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, or literally, tabernacled with us. The same glory that once filled the Garden in manifest form returned incarnate to walk among men as not only the essence and presence of God, but also fully human.
Part of learning what God is up to is yielding ourselves to obey His will, to live as He lived, not by withdrawing from the world, but revealing His holiness in it.
To walk out The Way means embracing His presence‑first pattern:
Real understanding and application flows from abiding, not from trying harder. When you choose to live in the awareness that “the Word became flesh”, you discover that every ordinary act can become a holy echo of the beauty and purity of Eden.

To walk out The Way means embracing His presence‑first pattern:
- See your home, work, and city as sacred spaces.
- Engage people not as interruptions but as invitations.
- Let nearness to God shape every response.
Real understanding and application flows from abiding, not from trying harder. When you choose to live in the awareness that “the Word became flesh”, you discover that every ordinary act can become a holy echo of the beauty and purity of Eden.
Reflection
Sometime today, during three routine moments, at a meal, on your commute, before you go to sleep, pause and think about how His presence makes the thing holy. Just like He made the Garden holy by being there, so He does in our everyday lives. This simple act, a simple pause with intentionality will help to retrain your sense to live as Jesus did: aware and awake to God's presence in every aspect of life.
Prayer
"Father, may today be a day filled with acute awareness that you are with me, walking beside me as you did Adam and Eve in the Garden. Thank you for your presence.
