As David pens this song, he isn’t sitting in a comfortable setting imagining what danger could possibly feel like. The introduction shows us these words were spoken after the Lord had rescued him from his enemies and from King Saul. As he looks back, he remembers moments when death seemed imminent; he was overwhelmed by destruction, and distress had driven him to cry out for help.

David paints a picture of the earth shaking, smoke rising, heavens bending, rolling thunder, and God coming down in power. It’s a poetic moment salted with energy as David attempts to describe how it felt to discover his cry had reached the ears of God.
 
What’s special about this Psalm is where his attention finally settles. He remembers the enemy, but he sings about the Lord. He recalls the danger, yet names God as his Rock. He knows what it means to be surrounded, and still calls God his fortress. He is acquainted with the need for rescue, but “Deliverer” remains on his lips.
 
What a wonderful picture of worship and trust with which to end the week.
The Scriptures affirm the spiritual battle is real while refusing to let the battle become ultimate in the story. It’s easy to become so interested in identifying the darkness that we slowly start giving the darkness more attention than it deserves. Before long, we know exactly what we’re afraid of but have lost sight of the One in whom we take refuge.

We have the glorious privilege of living on this side of the resurrection, and with that comes great confidence. On the cross and in the empty tomb, Jesus defeated every power of darkness, reclaimed every ounce of authority, and now presides over every grain of sand. He arose. He reigns. And we are His.

As you look back over this week, has your attention been drawn more toward the reality of evil or toward the authority of Christ? Where can you look back on your own story and recognize God as refuge, strength, or deliverer?

Lord, you are my Rock, my fortress, my refuge, and my deliverer. Thank you for meeting me in my fear, temptation, and weakness. Keep my eyes fixed on You instead of the darkness around me. Remind me how faithful You are when the battle feels close and long. Teach me to worship whether I understand the outcome or not. I praise you today because you are truly greater than any power that comes against me. Amen.
